Special Services

A ChristingleChristingle

Held in or around the Christmas season, the Christingle service presents Jesus as The Light of The World. Enjoyed by all, this wonderful candle lit service is geared up mainly towards the children among us.

Christingles (Christ Lights) are distributed to the children during the service gradually filling the church with light.

The orange represents the world.
The red ribbon represents the blood of Jesus that was shed to save mankind.
The four cocktail sticks decorated with different fruits or sweets represent the four corners of the world or the four seasons.
The candle at the centre of the orange represents Jesus as the light of the world.

Helping to shine a light into childrens's lives

The Childrens Society has adopted the service as a way of highlighting it's cause and as a way of gaining donations. For more information on thier work and further information on Christingle, please go to http://www.the-childrens-society.org.uk/.

The First Christingle

The Christingle has its origins in a Moravian children's service in Germany on Christmas Eve in 1747.

The bishop conducting the informal service gave each child a lighted candle, tied with a red ribbon, in memory of the Saviour's coming which he said has kindled a flame in each heart which keeps burning "to His joy, and our happiness".
